Nutrition and Psychotherapy

Given the title of this article, the first question you probably will be doing more than one is, what the hell does a psychiatrist talking about nutrition? I know it's not very often that a career in psychiatry, not only interested in this subject, but also use it in everyday clinical practice.

I am a true enthusiast of prevention in all areas of life and in that sense, I have to say, that while modern medicine is great for all the "acute" (you'll transplanted from operating or anything), leaves much be desired in the realm of the "preventive" (natural medicines give us a thousand times). To my fellow surgeons, often half-jokingly say that surgery is the failure of medicine, because when one has to undergo surgery in general is that since "we have been seven people."

As I explain in my blog, I dedicate myself to the technique of integral planned brief psychotherapy. If you look at the third word, says "integral" means that the individual study from the threefold biological, psychological and social. As first and foremost I am a doctor, I never forget the body, because I know that it is imperative to ally with him to fight the disease. I know many patients who are concerned about the car that much of your body.

What I can address the physical dimension of my patients, based on nutrition, is my training in orthomolecular medicine. Do not forget that the body and mind work together to maintain the balance of the whole person (homeostasis). I am convinced that everything is psychosomatic medicine and the rest, is a veterinarian.

For me, body care is based on two basic pillars: the lifestyle and nutrition. The lifestyle is based on getting enough sleep (which the Spanish do not), exercising moderately and removing toxic substances (in a special way, alcohol and snuff). As for nutrition, we will differentiate in appropriate and in that case, the power to call dry and optimal nutrition, which is what is achieved with the base multinutrient supplementation, antioxidants, essential fatty acids and probiotics. As you see, that old adage that says "health is at the plate and in the sole of the shoe" is very true.

When a patient comes into my office, in order to plan treatment is carried out a double scan. From the psychological point of view, is studied using a psychodiagnostic and from the organic point of view, are prescribed an analysis of free amino acids in plasma

In our body there are a number of amino acids are called essential because we can not synthesize, and can only be acquired through food. They are like "bricks" with which they make hormones, proteins, neurotransmitters and a host of substances essential for life.

If, for example, a patient is detected a deficit of essential amino acid tryptophan, as this is essential for the synthesis of melatonin (a hormone that induces sleep) and serotoninaque is a natural antidepressant, patients suffer from depression lack of tryptophan (triptofénica depression). In that case, instead of prescribing an antidepressant (synthetic drugs), I prescribe a nutritional supplement tryptophan, to be the body itself who "manufactured" the antidepressant you need.

I am absolutely convinced that all people are carriers of an "inner pharmacy" and therefore, our body has the capacity to cope with the many who suffer daily attacks. Therefore, I strongly emphasized that the doctor should be a "facilitator" of these potentials and hence the importance I give to have a good "toolbox."

Returning to the original topic of this article, we know that in recent decades, food has deteriorated considerably, decreasing at an alarming rate and gradually, the amount and quality of multinutrient. This is due to several factors, the most responsible, industrialization, land degradation and junk food habits. All these shortcomings, make our body suffers, and consequently decrease the immune response, inflammation and proliferation increased cardiovascular and degenerative diseases.

In industrialized countries, the proportion of obese people is soaring in geometric progression, the main result, the onset of type 2 diabetes. Both obesity and type 2 diabetes are now epidemic in America.

The history of nutritional disaster is:

In the Nixon era (1969-1974) program was created food surpluses for export to favor the dollar was so depreciated the first oil crisis (decade of the 70) To increase the production, required large amounts herbicides and fertilizers, which farmers had to depend on the industries producing crops quĂmicasSolo as many calories per acre, could benefit from the government program. Therefore, fruits and vegetables were excluded while the corn and soybean production soared (the crop is especially suitable for industrial farming techniques) The processed food industry grew and as a result found new uses for corn and sojaComo with corn and soybeans could produce cheap feed for livestock, it was possible to lower the cost of beef, pork and chicken, making all these animalesen industrial products. It transformed the corn and soybean cheap cheap cheap meat for food, with the consequences listed above While aid for corn and soybean production in 2007 amounted to 20,000 million dollars annually, for fruits and vegetables the This amount was almost inexistenteTodo, has resulted in the production of refined carbohydrates and vegetable oils cheap flights, which together with the progressive decrease in the consumption of fish oil, has caused the world population is increasingly exposed to disease diseases (allergies, asthma, cancer, Alzheimer's, depression, ADHD, inflammatory diseases, etc..) At the conclusion of the above, we know that America has become the manufacturer cheaper raw material food, which is used in the manufacture processed foods from around the world.

I think governments along with the multinational agribusiness, multinational pharmaceutical companies and the "official science" are anything but innocent of any catastrophe.

To finish "amargaros" day and for those who want to pursue the subject, I leave a brief review of three books, which I'm sure you "open your eyes" against this immorality.

The first is the book entitled "The World According to Monsanto" (peninsula) of French journalist Marie-Monique Robin. This company currently controls over 90% of the transgenic seed market and a significant volume of global food production. Almost nothing.

The second book is called "Health comes" (Peninsula) Miguel Jara. It is another journalist specializing in health research issues and ecology. It speaks of conditions that did not exist and the toxic impact on humans.

Finally, for the pharmaceutical industry does not go away with it, I recommend the book "Drugs that make us sick" (Counterpoint) by Ray Moynihan and Alan Cassels. The authors focus mainly on multinational explain how are you able to transform into diseases, which are normal states of life (shyness, menopause, mood swings, etc..) And to sell more drugs.
