13 ways to increase your luck in Social Media

If you are trying to raise productivity in the social media sites, here are some things to keep in mind:

- Do not be selfish and greedy. As in real life, people want nothing to do with somebody who is simply looking for themselves. Show some understanding and interest in others' life and work, and you will see the same thing.

- Understanding the culture of the particular site that you are using. For example, Digg is full of lovers of the apple, tech nerds, intelligent, even if immature high school students and human rights of some 20 young smokers believe things that Darwin would hang a poster on their wall dorm room before Jenna Jameson. Netscape on the other hand, has a more mature crowd, especially policy-oriented, and it goes on - every site has some really 'different demographic altogether.

- Use the real picture for your avatar if this is the trend. If the trend is another thing, do it - again, we're going with the flow of the site you are using.

- On social bookmarking sites, bookmark is not crap. This means that your shit, someone else's crap, crap neighbor's dog, just do not. Nothing kills your credibility more of a social bookmarking site then someone who a) is a spammer, or b) has no taste. In both cases it is toast.

- Most large sites have become more difficult to reach the first page and smaller sites are now large enough to send decent traffic and links. Make sure you are using a wide range of social sites, not just the very top. Save all your accounts on a spreadsheet to stay organized.

- Know the characteristics of the site of each particular site is using social media. Ask yourself the following questions:

- I have to have a public profile?

- And 'search engine friendly and can be indexed in Google?

- Can I insert links in my public profile? With the anchor text? There is a no-follow links on these? (Hint:. Aaron Walls Use instrument extension for Firefox and you can see all the no follow links on a page easily)

- It is useful to have an old account - this is true of almost all social media sites, just across the board. You can often find a friend with an old score to settle or make a market in a popular forum.

- Is there an RSS feed on your profile? Put on the excel spreadsheet and submit it to various engines RSS / directory.

- Stay focused with your goals - it's too easy to get distracted on all these sites and 20 YouTube video or a conspiracy theory later, just wasted an hour. If you want to read a great article on how to set and maintain goals, my friend Justin Goff I met at the CAC in Las Vegas wrote recently on a theme.

- If there are groups, sign up and post topics, become an active member. As a forum, which will be recognized over time by regular and become a respectable member, if you behave like this.

- Be friendly. People on these sites are generally nice people and you would be surprised how much you would get from just being a really good person.

- Do not ignore the real people - This is especially true for marketers who are building only one account per site. If the people you add as a friend or a message, vote for their stories, post back, to recognize them. I liken it to an individual moving to a new city where he / she knows. Begin with the first person, and the network from there - you certainly can not occur in Los Angeles and walk into a Playboy Mansion party.

And unfortunately .....

- If you are sneaky, push the limits already. There is absolutely no point in trying to game social media sites, if you're going to do it half assed. If you decide to go this route you need to know what they can get away with it and what is not possible so as to press against the wall every time to maximize efficiency .......
