"La Gaceta" De Salamanca turns 90

Nobody has asked me to write this article.

I say this because in our picturesque time of factions and slogans, fanaticism and obsequiousness several, often proliferate tiralevitas and henchmen willing to write to the dictates of ideology, political parties or business interests.

For seven long years I've been working with the Gazette, the newspaper nobody ever made me any suggestion about what to say or what I should be silent another. Of course it is right and if it had not been like my help with this house would have taken a sigh from any attempt at imposition. But right does not mean that it is normal. On the contrary, the more or less covert censorship, defending inconfensables cares sometimes and manipulation of information have increased exponentially in Spain during recent years.

It is true that the European press was born almost four centuries as a means of indoctrination, rather than information. But in this country where we had some free newspapers better informed of the continent during the period of political transition, the press has led unfortunately to the defense of the positions less even-handed and enlightening public opinion. As proof, the two youngest national daily newspapers are just the most extremist of both political sign.

In THE GAZETTE perceive the opposite. And I can say unequivocally because for a while its competitor was loyal without being able to overcome it, that in sports terms. Paradoxically or not life, then I have been much better treated in this paper than I was at the time by the company which then served with all my dedication.

And, without giving up those conservative principles of its foundation - why should I? - GAZETTE shows a liberal that is manifested, among other things, the ideological diversity of its columnists. Therefore, in this present world in which the press has a problematic future, I want GAZETTE held many more anniversaries.
