Events and team building exercises


This document is all about understanding teams and team building training for the purpose of team building activities, because the corporate team building events can be effective, planning a strategy for team building, building creative teams.

Why team building activity or event?

This is a phrase we hear a lot these days: 'we need some kind of team building activities'. Corporate team building events are on the rise: they all seem to be having these days. But the high expectations?

See, from our point of view, often the people who talk about team building, do not really know what they mean.

The reality is that many if not most, team building activities do not work. They should. All that thought, effort, money, planning should make your team building event exciting, useful and productive.

And 'as if we all know that teams are good. We understand what the sum of the parts, but I do not know how to make a team the way they'd like to, so we think, 'My team could not work as well as a team building will solve everything. '

Why a team building event?

When people say they want a team building event is their image of this group of people working perfectly. But do not take the time to pin the image down and really clear what the problems are. If so then their team building activities will certainly help them to get their teams more effectively.

How teams work

What a team?

It can help you decide what your team building activity is going to look as if you understand a little 'more about how teams work. And, get this - no matter what the books say (and there are lots of them) - Each team is different: there is no model to follow, which will create the perfect team.

You read that you need people ideas, drivers, completer finishers, etc., etc., etc. And yes, maybe you need a variety of 'types'. But for our money, the 'types' are much less important than ensuring that the team knows why it exists and what are its purposes.

So let's look first exactly what being a team means. One might think that 'team' the word itself is clear in and of itself: a group of people working toward shared goals. We wish it were that simple. Since it is not, we thought we would not shell out a bit '.

Sports teams

The most obvious of the team that everyone knows is a sports team. Each team member is on the same side trying to beat the opposition. They train together, get to understand how best to use their skills, and works well when you are able to meet the manager or the coach's strategy.

They know that their opposition and have very clear goals. Yes, there may be peculiarities and differences of personality, but the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

The strangest thing of all, of course, is that it is not always clear who is the 'opposition' is. You would think that would be competition - anyone in the company's closest rival is. Unfortunately, too often, the opposition appears to be just from home base: another team or department, the 'management' or someone sitting next to you.

The common enemy

Now the thing about 'opposition' is that it gives a common goal, a common 'enemy' if you want. Now that is great if it is productive. Creative ideas can be paid by a group when it comes to understanding how to manage competition.

However, when the common enemy is someone or some group or some service, or 'them' and 'them' are the same company, the results are no divisions, gossip, complaining. The end result of this is, of course, a loss of productivity and of people working against not, for the other.

Then it's all about 'them' and 'us', with people running around with their energies to achieve more than' we 'agree only what's wrong with them'. We see it in company after company after company - people are spending enormous amounts of time and energy that have a 'go' each other instead of using the same amount of time and energy to make things work better.

This is one of the main reasons why team building is a hot topic. People can easily recognize that something must be done, but I'm not quite sure what.

Types of teams

In these days we see a lot of 'virtual' teams - people who rarely see one another, or even working in the same office or even the same country.

Then there are teams that all sit in an open-plan space and chat with each other all day as things occur.

There are teams where people sit in separate rooms and meeting once per day / week / fortnight.

There are teams that seem to do all their communicating by e-mail or conference calls.

There are teams that work together on projects, and others where people go out and do their thing and we meet every once in a while 'to say and bring everyone else up to date.

Whatever your team seems, however, must still be able to function well and achieve its objectives.

Which teams are not

They should not be a family

People should not be breast friends

People do not even have to like each other enough to want to dine together

The teams are not a group therapy

Teams can, however, at times, be any or all of these things.

Teams are complex machines and it is not surprising that occasionally malfunction or need re-alignment. Every once in a while 'all teams need an MOT, so naturally, you want to ensure that your team building event is effective because it can be.

The only thing that everyone agrees is that your team building activities that must be done outside the office environment. The idea is to slow things down, to get away from e-mail, phone calls, questions and concerns that have been asked to pop into unscheduled meetings, people who fall out.

This means moving away from all the day to day things that sometimes makes it difficult to understand what is happening and what is needed.

Here are some tips and advice to make planning your team building event more effective:

Listen carefully to people's concerns and incorporate them in the training of team building

Nobody should ever be put in place or humiliated

People should not be forced to do things that they want

People learn best when they enjoy

Focus on the positive aspects of the team rather than what does not work

Team building activities

Once you know what you want your event to achieve, then you can decide what is going to look like. You can do the go-kart thing, people taking off Welsh mountains thing. You can have the cozy get-away in a country hotel thing. You can have non-stop entertainment, and business center or get a little 'of both.

There are hundreds of different team building exercises, games, workshops, courses, all designed to get your team to work smarter and manage the day to day challenges in the workplace.

There is no such 'right' of team building activities, only what you need.

The key is always to ensure that your event has a positive effect on, moral motivation, confidence and effectiveness of the team and its individual members....
